Jon was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1974 and shortly thereafter moved to Minnesota with his parents and two older sisters. Afraid they were all going to freeze to death, Jon’s family moved back to Toledo where he stayed until moving out to the east coast to attend Dartmouth College.
Jon majored in Government, minored in Sociology, and played for the “Big Green” football team in between. Blocking his way to glory—or at least the starting line-up—Jon hung up his cleats when he graduated in 1996, promising never ever to run again. From there, Jon attended the University of Michigan Law School and the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy in a joint degree program. As though that was not enough to do, Jon also started training with the Michigan Reserve Officers’ Training Corps to become a commissioned officer in the Army National Guard—summarily breaking his promise to never run again. However, it was not all work and no play for Jon; he did find time to meet his beautiful future wife, Linda.
After graduating from the University of Michigan in 2002, Jon began his legal career at the New York City Law Department in the Legal Counsel Division. After becoming a member of the New York Bar in 2003, Jon toiled for the city, drafting legislation for the Mayor and various city agencies, avoiding political brouhahas, and occasionally starting them.
In 2004, Jon, an Armor Officer, was called up for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Even though Jon was a Tank Platoon leader, they had apparently run out of tanks in Iraq and sent him over to command a platoon of infantry soldiers. During his first six months of deployment, Jon conducted full-spectrum combat operations in the northwest corner of Baghdad, while sorely missing the 69 tons of armor his tank would have afforded him. The last six months of his yearlong tour were spent training Iraqi Army Forces in what he calls “the most complicated babysitting job in the world”.
After returning home from Iraq, Jon decided that New York City was far too dangerous, and he and his wife set out to find a nice safe place to start a family. The two of them were fortunate enough to find jobs in South Florida and moved to Plantation in 2006. Jon spent the next two years working for Broward County’s Small Business Development Division, assisting small businesses in doing business with Broward. Jon worked in every facet of the office from the recruitment and certification of small businesses to ensuring County compliance with the rules and regulations of the program. However, feeling as though he was losing too many arguments to his wife, Jon became a member of the Florida Bar in 2007 and returned to the practice of law when joining Jacobson, Sobo and Moselle in 2008.
When not at the office, Jon can be found spending time with his wife, their 9-month-old son, Ethan, and their adopted “dog-ter”, Mildred (“Millie”) May, a rescued Boston and Rat Terrier mix. Or, if his knees feel just right, Jon can be found playing—and we use the term loosely—basketball with a group of out-of-shape, middle-aged men attempting to recapture the athletic glory of their youth.
