Jim was born in Brooklyn in 1942 and moved with his parents and brother to Miami Beach in 1951. He attended Emory University in Atlanta, where he majored in history and was an honor student. After his junior year, he entered law school at Duke University. Jim graduated from law school with honors and returned to South Florida to begin his career as a civil litigator. He honed his craft for three years at Koenig & Katz before starting his own general practice firm with Errol Rosen. Over the years, from the firm’s inception as Rosen and Jacobson to its present form as Jacobson, Sobo & Moselle, he has been the managing shareholder, senior litigator, chief cook and bottle washer. Jim is admitted to practice in all Florida courts as well as the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. While at Duke, Jim met and married his first wife, Marty. They had two children, a daughter, Jody, and a son, Justin. Jody, a graduate of Oberlin College and the Virginia Consortium for Psychology, is a psychologist in Norfolk, Virginia. She and her husband, Steve, have two incredibly beautiful and brilliant daughters, Jim's eldest granddaughters, Genna and Jamie. Justin, after graduating from Princeton University and Duke University School of Law, returned to Florida with his wife, Jeannine, still another Duke lawyer. As amazing as it sounds they have two incredibly beautiful and brilliant daughters, Jim’s local granddaughters, Jadyn and Jara, who he can visit when ever he needs a little sunshine.

After Marty and Jim divorced in 1995, he met and married his current wife, Patti. Before her retirement, she was the director for academics at the University School of Nova-Southeastern University. Patti’s children, his stepdaughter Alexis and stepson Jonathon were a bonus. Alexis, after graduating from Florida State University, married Brent and moved to Atlanta, where she is a trauma room nurse. In addition to saving lives she has just provided Jim with one more beautiful and brilliant granddaughter. With five, Jim plans to shape his granddaughters into a world class basketball team. Jonathan is currently an honor student at Duke. He plays in the pep band to keep the Cameron Crazies stirred up and manages the student union’s special events. Although he plays clarinet, flute, piano, saxophone and guitar and speaks English, Spanish, and Italian and is studying Chinese, he is still deciding whether he can best serve humanity in international finance or as a lawyer--as opposed to Jim’s suggestion that he become the next James Bond.

Jim was the founder of the Florida Association of Collection Attorneys, the first statewide association for collection lawyers in Florida. Additionally, Jim is a founding member of the National Association of Retail Collection Attorneys. He has been the Florida state chairman for the Commercial Law League of America, has served on numerous CLLA committees, and has lectured at CLLA conventions. He is a member of the American Bar Association, The Florida Bar, the Broward County Bar, and the South Broward Bar.

Jim is an animal lover (Ryan the soft coated Wheaton terrier, Junior the standard poodle, and Jake the Labrador retriever), sports enthusiast (Duke basketball, Canes football, Dolphins, Heat, Marlins and Panthers), stamp collector (mint U.S. and Israel) and trivia buff (who would have won millions, if Regis would have only returned his calls).
